I’m a sucker for sci-fi movies.
So like any self-respecting movie nerd…
I had to go see Project Hail Mary in IMAX.
Surprise, surprise - I thoroughly enjoyed it lol
And in case you don’t follow the movie business as closely as I do…
It has dramatically overperformed at the box office so far.
Tracking originally had it doing somewhere in the neighborhood of $40-$50 million on opening weekend…
Yet it surged past that to a whopping $80.6 million.
Basically DOUBLE the initial projections.
Which is mighty rare these days.
In fact:
Project Hail Mary is only the SECOND non-sequel, non-franchise film to open that big in the last decade.
The other one was Oppenheimer back in 2023.
Everything else in the top 10 openings over the past ten years has a sequel or some kind of franchise IP.
In other words:
Hollywood's been playing it safe for years.
Sequels, reboots, "cinematic universes”...
The same formulas repackaged with scripts that somehow keep getting worse 🫠

People are starving for fresh stories.
They can smell recycled formulas from a mile away.
