News flash:
Reading books and being a nerd wasn’t always cool.
In fact, back when I was growing up…
Doing any of the following things could invite relentless teasing at school:
- Reading epic fantasy books
- Playing PC games like Diablo & Starcraft
- Hosting Xbox LAN parties with 10-12 of your friends
- Obsessing over how to beat Goldeneye on 00 Agent
Nevertheless:
I stuck to my guns.
Partly because my parents made a voracious reader out of me starting a young age.
I remember chewing through library copies of books like Harry Potter, The Mists of Avalon, and The Wheel of Time.
And given my early fondness for epic tales…
There’s always been a part of me that’s dreamt of becoming an author.
But whenever I pictured the moment in my head…
I figured you got an embossed envelope in the mail from the League of Authors™ that would say:
“CONGRATS! YOU ARE NOW AN AUTHOR”
… But of course that’s not really how it works lol
In fact, it’s been a bit of a strange experience.
On the one hand, I’ve been selling PDF copies of my book every day through ads for the past few months…
Meanwhile, I’ve been reviewing multiple proof editions before finally locking the Kindle and paperback versions back in early January…
So there hasn’t really been a seminal moment where I felt like “now I am an author”...
Even after my book went live on Amazon.
And identity shifts are funny like that.
We envision them happening all at once…
But in practice…
They’re more like gradual shifts that take conscious effort to accept and embrace.
And they’re achieved more through daily habits than singular achievements.
Same thing goes for becoming a successful newsletter publisher:
I can give you the step-by-step formula to convert subscribers into buyers…
… yet it’s up to you to claim the identity of a successful publisher for yourself.
It starts with taking steps to add new subscribers to your list every day…
And sending story-driven emails to them as often as you can.
Some will hit and some won’t.
But the point isn’t to write winners every day…
It’s to stay consistent and keep learning.
To uncover exactly what your audience wants and how to give it to them.
This is what makes a successful newsletter publisher.
