Confession:

I don't usually map out themes for my daily emails.

I prefer to write whatever feels fresh in the moment.

But every now and then, writer's block creeps in...

And I hit a wall.

Like this morning, for instance.

I sat down to write, had zero stories coming to mind, and just... stared at the screen.

Not fun.

So I did what any self-respecting email marketer would do in a moment of crisis:

I pulled a George Costanza.

Now, in case you never watched Seinfeld…

There’s an episode where George (one of the main characters) realizes that every instinct he's ever had has been wrong...

So he decides to do the complete opposite of whatever feels natural:

Swaps his usual tuna on toast for chicken salad on rye…

Walks up to a woman he'd normally be too intimidated to approach…

Tells George Steinbrenner exactly what he thinks of him in a job interview...

And gets hired with the New York Yankees on the spot.

In other words:

It’s clearly a foolproof recipe for success 😂

So, coming back to my battle with the blank page…

Instead of starting with the story like I normally would...

I did the opposite.

And skipped straight to Step 2.

I came up with the lesson I wanted to share first...

Then worked backwards to find a story that fit it.

Worked like a charm.

Managed to get this email done in less than 20 minutes.

Point is:

Sometimes the fastest way forward is backwards.

Starting with the lesson and reverse-engineering a story around it can break the block instantly.
