list monetization mistakes

True story:

Back in 2024, I wrote some ads for a client that positively caught fire.

We spent almost a million dollars on them in the span of just 60 days…

It was wild.

Yet despite this massive influx of fresh traffic onto her list…

She made just six sales from it the next month.

Yikes!

My first thought is that there must’ve been a broken link or something…

But nope.

No tech issues.

So I dug into her emails to see if I could figure out what the heck was going on…

And the culprit became obvious pretty quickly.

Every single email was a “how-to” lesson.

Or a blog post.

Tips, frameworks, step-by-step breakdowns...

All designed to deliver value and build goodwill with her audience.

And on paper, that sounds reasonable enough.

But in practice, it’s not what converts subscribers into buyers.

Instead, it does the opposite…

It encourages consumption.

Not action.

Anyway, moral of the story is:

The problem is almost never what you think it is.

In this client’s case, she didn't actually have a “copywriting” problem…

She had a strategy problem.

She was focused entirely on growing goodwill when what her list actually needed was a reason to buy.

And here's the thing...

I see the flipside of this mistake all the time too.

Coaches who are obsessed with optimizing the bejesus out of their email copy… when really what they need is a self-liquidating funnel to grow their list instead.

Same symptom…

But completely different diagnosis.

And completely different fix.

Which is why "just send better emails" is the worst advice I can give most people.
