Confession:

Marketing yourself isn’t easy.

A reality many freelancers are forced to confront the second they hang out their own shingle.

Myself included.

You’re so used to figuring out how to sell living crap out of other people’s stuff…

Yet for some reason, the second you have to talk about yourself, your accomplishments, and your own products and services…

You get a wicked case of the yips.

But if it’s any consolation…

We aren’t the only ones who struggle with this.

Case in point:

Rick Rubin recently interviewed red hot writer and director Mike White on his podcast.

Now, if you don’t recognize the name…

Mike is the creative genius behind The White Lotus…

Which has become a full-blown cultural phenomenon over the last two seasons.

Mike created the show AND has written and directed every single episode across three hugely successful seasons.

Talk about an impressive dude.

Anyhow, the podcast did not disappoint.

In fact, I felt like it captured the emotional rollercoaster of what it’s like to be a working creative so perfectly.

But one exchange really took me by surprise…

Here’s what happened:

Rick asked Mike what makes The White Lotus different from other TV shows…

Which is a bit of a softball question, wouldn’t you say?

And yet…

The words that proceeded to come out of Mike’s mouth can only be described as premium, grass-fed gobbledygook.

He talked about not wanting to write something “super plotty”...

And said something else about “the time element”...

Along with a whole bunch of other stuff that made literally zero sense lol.

Seriously…

I was sitting there going ‘WTF is he talking about??’

It was unreal.

But here’s the funny part:

The fact that he couldn’t articulate even a half-decent answer to a layup question like that was actually really comforting.

Because if an insanely talented writer like Mike White struggles to promote his work…

Well, maybe I don’t need to sweat it so much when the same thing happens to me.

And, more importantly:

Neither do you.

So don’t forget it.

That’s all I got for ya today, though.

I’m almost done coding the new and improved EmailStoryselling.ai 2.0…

(which I am stupidly hyped up about… in case you can’t tell haha)

So it’s straight back to the terminal for me.

Enjoy your weekend 🤘
