I recently started watching a new show called Landman.
It was created by Taylor Sheridan, who also wrote Yellowstone, 1923, and Tulsa King...
And the guy is an absolute machine.
Which, frankly, makes me respect his work even more.
Writing one mega-hit show is hard enough.
Most writers never get there.
Stringing together hit after hit across multiple series is a different animal entirely.
I’d heard good things about Landman, plus it’s got a star studded cast…
And safe to say it’s delivered so far.
But after watching a few episodes, what stood out to me the most wasn’t the witty banter, in-depth worldbuilding, or hilariously toxic characters…
It’s how straight up informative it is.
You learn a ton about the oil and gas world just by watching it.
Like how dangerous it is to work "the patch"...
How there's a very specific “sweet spot” when it comes to the price per barrel...
And how deeply the entire industry is wired into the broader economy.
Among other things.
Stuff I would NEVER go study on purpose lol
You won’t find me reading blog posts about pipeline logistics or drilling economics...
But wrap those same ideas inside explosions, tension, ego, money, and people making bad decisions under pressure?
Now you’ve got my attention.
It’s the furthest thing possible from a documentary…
Yet it’s taught me a bunch of things I didn’t know.
All because it’s delivered indirectly.
I.e wrapped in an entertaining story.
A lesson every coach, consultant and expert with an email list would do well to internalize.
Because most people assume the value is in the information itself...
So they crank out these long emails packed with tips, tricks, and tactics…
Then they wonder why nobody reads them.
Or buys from them.
It’s not that your audience doesn’t want to learn…
It’s just they’d rather be entertained instead.
That's why storytelling is such a powerful tool for persuasion at scale.
Curiosity, tension, and conflict will carry your insights further than explanation ever will.
So if your emails have been feeling flat lately…
Or if your value content doesn’t seem to be driving as many sales as it should…
It may have nothing to do with the quality of your ideas.
You just need to “smuggle” them into the minds of your audience with an entertaining story.
Some food for thought :)
